ictions being handed out by every Wayne, Dirk and Barry, I thought I’d jump on the

bandwagon myself and try to figure out who might finish the season as the top marksm

an in the top division.

Let’s start by looking at

everyone’s favourite Madridista -Fernando Torres. The former Atletico man has bagged an extraordinary 38 goals in 49 league starts since his £26.5m move to Anfield two summers ago.

His talent is undisputed, as is his ability to score on the big occasion, having netted against the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in the last couple years. Indeed, he scored his very first Liverpool goal against the London team.

The key to Torres topping the pile will be the deployment of Steven Gerrard. The two dovetailed superbly last season as Gerrard was let off the leash by Rafael Benitez, but with Xabi Alonso departing for pastures new it remains to be seen whether Liverpool’s talismanic captain will retain the free role he so relishes.

Then again, if Gerrard is kept in the final third by Benitez then it is not inconceivable that he could outscore his strike partner. He managed a highly respectable 15 goals last campaign and that was without the assistance of Torres for large periods due to the Spaniard’s injury problems.

Add to this the fact that he is Liverpool’s incumbent penalty taker (and is not exactly averse to hitting the ground to win them) and he might be a good outside bet.

Moving along the M62 to Manchester United, there will be much expected of Dimitar Berbatov as he seeks to fill the goal-scoring void left by the prolific Cristiano Ronaldo. Just nine goals in his debut season with the Red Devils was not what Sir Alex Ferguson paid almost £31m for and a 50 percent improvement will be the bare minimum required from the Bulgarian.

His record at Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen show he is more than capable - with a strike-rate of one in two at both clubs - though perhaps United’s main representative in the table will beWayne Rooney.

The pugnacious Scouser will be chomping at the bit now that he no longer has to compete with a Portuguese winger for the spotlight – unless, of course, a miracle occurs and Nani actually learns how to play football.

Rooney’s achilles heel, though, is that he only ever scores in spurts before hitting a barren patch in front of goal. He will need to hit the back of the net on a more consistent basis if he wants to pick up the Golden Boot.

For Rooney to score all those goals he will have to play more centrally but it might just be that he is once again shunted out onto the flanks to accommodate a certain Michael Owen.

The former Liverpool striker’s goalscoring exploits are well-documented and although he is unlikely to scream past defenders any more, he has always profited from good service, something that is guaranteed at Old Trafford.

Lest we forget, it was Chelsea who fielded last season’s most productive striker in the form of Nicolas Anelka. It was claimed that he was simply a flat-track bully capable only of scoring goals against the likes of Sunderland and West Brom, though he did score in each of his games against Aston Villa as well as his obligatory goal against his former employers, Arsenal.

For the second half of the season he was posted on the right flank and the goals dried up, but on the one occasion that he played in an orthodox partnership with Didier Drogba – a set-up likely to be used this season by Carlo Ancelotti - he scored one and made the other two in the 3-1 home win against Fulham.

It seems, though, that the greater beneficiary of this pairing will be the barnstorming Drogba. His power and ability to hold the ball are assets well known to the football fraternity (as are his Bafta-winning antics closer to the ground) but it has also been proven that as a goal-machine he is more effective in a front two.

The imposing Ivorian was the Premier League’s leading marksman in the 2006-07 season when the purchases of Andrei Shevchenko and Michael Ballack forced then manager Jose Mourinho to play with a diamond in midfield and two strikers.

It may have signalled the end of Chelsea’s league domination but it supplied Drogba with the bullets that fired him to the top of the goalscoring charts and become the first Blues player to hit 20 league goals in a season since Kerry Dixon.

Robin van Persie at Arsenal has always shown form in front of goal, though injuries seem to play a factor every season. The jury is still out on Eduardo – despite having a natural eye for goal – though the departure to Eastlands of Emmanuel Adebayorshould mean that Arsene Wenger will select him in his starting 11 on a more regular basis.

Manchester City have an impressive artillery to choose from but it is as yet unclear who will feature week-to-week out of Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tevez, Robinho, Craig Bellamy and the aforementioned Adebayor.

One player who has not yet been mentioned is Tottenham’sJermain Defoe, who will be gunning for a place in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad, and a continuation of his career average of a goal every other game could propel him to the top of the standings.

Away from the stellar names, there is always scope for a previously unsung player or one playing for an unfashionable club – Kevin Phillips in 1999-2000 springs to mind - to upset the established order and take the honours against all odds.

However, I feel, predictably, that the top goalscorer will come from one of the Big Four . How about yours?

The Times says United have decided not to sanction a £5.5 million deal to sign Dodô, the Corinthians defender, in the immediate future but will continue to monitor the 17-year-old Brazilian after he spent two weeks on trial recently.

The much vaunted Brazilian youngster seemed likely to be the latest member of the club’s Samba club, but the deal appears to have turned sour. Should United fans be worried about the centre of their defence? Well as a fan, I can tell you I am not worried, not one little bit.

If the unthinkable does happen, and Vidic and Ferdinand find themselves out of action at the exact same time then we may have a little trouble, but that can be said of any club who loses the heart of their defence. However Jonny Evans is ready, willing and able to fill in if needed. Then of course Wes Brown is a capable centre back, hell even Gary Neville can be called upon to cover the breach. We also have the likes of youngsters James Chester and Craig Cathcart to revert to if the club is struck down by a huge injury disaster. To be honest our squad is almost TOO big, so no need to bring in yet more mouths to feed.

Chelsea’s Move for Pirlo Over as Italian Commits to AC Milan for Life!

Andrea Pirlo has ended speculation that he will join Chelsea by announcing that he has been taken off the transfer market by AC Milan and hopes to stay with the Serie A side for the rest of his career.

Andrea Pirlo hopes to help AC Milan overcome the loss of Paolo Maldini and Kaka this season.

The Italy midfielder has been linked with a move to the big-spending English Premier League club since coach Carlo Ancelotti quit Milan at the end of May and agreed to take over from Guus Hiddink at Stamford Bridge.

The 30-year-old revealed on the Milan Web site that new team boss Leonardo was happy to keep him at the San Siro.

“Today is a great day, I’m very happy to be able to end my career here,” Pirlo said on Thursday.

“This is thanks to president Silvio Berlusconi, Adriano Galliani and Leonardo who have given me the possibility to end my career here by taking me off the market.

“When they communicated this news to me, we were all happy. Finally this story ends and I can continue my adventure with the Rossoneri. (CNN)

This will come as a blow to Carlo Ancelotti who was clearly very keen to sign his former AC Milan favourite and no doubt the west London club’s supporters who had hoped the Italian international would make the move to west London.

It appears the move may have just been a ploy to get himself a new deal at the San Siro, I know, who would have thought it! It’s so unlike a player to do something like that, but hey ho, it was always going to be hard to fit the visionary veteran into the clubs now crowded midfield.

Liverpool agree to sale of Alonso

Alonso has been linked with a return to Spain for some time Liverpool have reached an agreement to sell midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, subject to a medical. The fee for the Spanish international is reported to be in the region of £30m but Liverpool said the terms of the deal would remain confidential. The 27-year-old joined Liverpool from Real Sociedad in August 2004. A statement on Real's website confirmed the news and added that Alonso will arrive in Madrid on Wednesday "to undergo the required medical". However, Alonso did not want to move and a deal for Barry eventually fell through, with Alonso going on to play a key role as Liverpool finished second in the Premier League.

Chelsea to splash £100million!!!

Chelsea expect to complete the signing of Andrea Pirlo this week and will then intensify their efforts to lure Franck Ribery and Sergio Aguero to Stamford Bridge.

The trio would cost Roman Abramovich the best part of £100million in transfer fees alone but the Chelsea owner is determined to prove he has not lost the appetite to compete in the transfer market, despite a slow start to his summer trading.

When John Terry agreed to commit his future to the club last week, he cited a pledge from Abramovich to bolster the squad with star names as a key reason.

Since then, Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of 30-year-old Pirlo and are bracing themselves to fight Manchester United for both Aguero and Ribery in a pre-season transfer duel which could prove crucial to this season's Barclays Premier League title race.

Pirlo looks set for west London, with new manager Carlo Ancelotti intending to field him as a deep-lying playmaker at the bottom of his midfield diamond with a brief to dictate the rhythm of the team.

AC Milan are wary of the potential reaction from their supporters after seeing the popular trio of Ancelotti, Paolo Maldini and Kaka all leave the San Siro this summer.

Vice-president Adriano Galliani and new manager Leonardo have consistently claimed Pirlo is not for sale, but they are aware he is anxious to follow his mentor to Stamford Bridge and Milan are privately committed to rejuvenating their ageing squad to compete with Inter Milan.

Milan rejected Chelsea's initial approach for Pirlo but an improved bid of £12million plus striker Claudio Pizarro could persuade them to do business, possibly in time for the Italian midfielder to make his debut against Manchester United in the Community Shield.

Sunday's clash at Wembley will be the precursor to an August duel between Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson because United are also keen on signing Aguero from Atletico Madrid, who rate him at £45m.

Personal terms may yet prove the stumbling block for Aguero, on target in London for Atletico against Paris St-Germain in the pre-season Emirates Cup on Sunday.

Real Madrid, Ribery's first choice of destination, have cooled their interest since landing Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo and Abramovich, who has pursued the gifted 26-year-old through the summer, is prepared to go through the £40m barrier to add Ribery's raw pace to his experienced Chelsea squad.

Valencia would be more willing to allow Silva to leave than David Villa and could be forced to let their left winger depart if he makes public his desire to join Manchester United. Silva, 23, came through the ranks at Valencia and has played 26 times for Spain, scoring three goals and he was part of the successful Euro 2008 team. Last season he missed two months with an ankle injury and in total played 22 games, scoring five goals and providing seven assists. Silva is contracted to Valencia until the end of the 2012/2013 season and although he is predominantly a left winger he can also play on the right or through the middle. Over in the Daily Star Sunday, John Richardson claims "Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has targeted Atletico Madrid’s Sergio Aguero as the man to score the missing Old Trafford goals." Sergio Aguero, 21, came through the ranks at Independiente and joined Atletico Madrid during the 2006/2007 season. In 2007/2008 he scored 23 goals in 43 appearances and during 2008/2009 he claimed 21 goals in 45 games and also provided eight assists. Nicknamed "Kun," after a Japanese cartoon character, Aguero was voted FIFA Young Player of the Year in 2007 and is developing into one of the most prolific strikers in world football. Despite his young age he has played 15 times for the Argentinean national team and scored six goals.

Real Madrid hold Alonso talks with Liverpool
